FAQ

What is the US duty on goods from Japan?

As of HTS Revision 22 (2026), heading 9903.05.49 sets the rate for most goods of Japan: a total of 12.5% when the General rate is lower, otherwise the General rate, with listed product exceptions.

Why does every cheap-duty item from Japan pay 12.5%?

Because the Japan rule is a floor: the total duty is raised to 12.5% when the General rate is below it. A Free candle pays 12.5%; a 16% bag line stays at 16%.

What Etsy fees apply with a bank account in Japan?

The 6.5% transaction fee on item price plus shipping, payment processing of 6% + $0.30 per order (Etsy fee pages, checked 2026-11-03). The calculator charges them on the tariff-inclusive price.

Does Etsy require DDP for US orders from this country?

Etsy’s rule covers every seller shipping to US buyers from outside the US: since July 9, 2026 US orders need Delivered Duty Paid shipping to keep Etsy Purchase Protection, and tariffs charged to buyers can be deducted from the seller. Where no DDP service exists, the listing must say duties are not included and the buyer must get an estimate before shipping.
